1 - What is engineered hardwood?

Engineered hardwood starts with a plywood core and is topped with a thin layer of real hardwood. This reduces the risk of the wood expanding, contracting, warping and developing squeaks. Engineered hardwood that floats using a click tongue uses a High Density Fiber (HDF) core, similar to laminate, and is topped with a thin layer of real hardwood.

2 - What species of wood is the most dent resistant?

Exotic woods like Jatoba are among the most dent resistant. You can find out the hardness of most wood species by how they performed on the Janka test.

3 - Will my hardwood floor stand up to my dog?

Although todays hardwood floors are scratch-resistant, a large dog may cause severe scratches and indentations. If scratches are a primary concern, a laminate will stand up better to a dogs claws.

4 - How many times can hardwood be re-finished.

Solid hardwood can be sanded and re-finished numerous times. Engineered hardwood can be refinished by a qualified professional. Engineered hardwood that has a thin layer of real hardwood can be screened and coated, scratches however may not be repairable. Quality engineered hardwood can be re-finished at least two times.
