Frequently Asked Questions

1  -  What's the difference between Ceramic and Porcelain tile?

Ceramic tiles are generally made from red or white clay fired in a kiln.  They are then finished with a durable glaze which carries the colour and pattern.  Porcelain tiles are made by the dust pressed method where clays, talc and other ingredients are, at extremely high pressures, pressed into a mold.   Porcelain tiles are much harder and usually have a much lower water absorption rate than ceramic tiles making them frost resistant.

2  -  Can I install ceramic outside?

Ceramic tile may absorb water which would freeze in the winter months resulting in broken tiles.  Porcelain tiles with at least a PEI rating of 5 are frost proof and can be installed outside.

3  -  Will my new tile start to crack over time?

Red clay tiles are a softer tile and therefore more likely to crack.  A ceramic or porcelain tile with a PEI rating of 4 or more is not likely to crack when installed properly over a structure that is sound.

4  -  Will the grout stay clean?

Grout is very porus and is therfore prone to staining.  The best way to keep grout lines looking clean is to seal the grout lines and have a regular cleaing schedule.  Grout used in a shower application where hard water is used will be difficult to keep from staining.
